Toots in 'Snowfall' by Gary Alston
Choosing just the right fabric for an outfit can be the difference between
a nice outfit & a great outfit. this one is unarguably 'Great'. |

These outfits were made
by Lorraine Tyler, one of our Tressy group members.
Notice how good use is made of a tiny print fabric.
It looks much more authentic than larger prints. Many craft shops now have
small print fabrics as it is very popular for patchwork. They will also
sell it in small quantities called "Fat Quarters", plenty to
make a lovely outfit for your dolls. |

I call this
outfit "Check it out". It is made from a small piece of fabric
from a pack of fat quarters I purchased to use in patchwork. The colours
seemed just right for Tressy.
The pattern I used Vogue Craft 7552 and is currently available. It has
many suitable patterns for Tressy & other similar dolls.
The dog tooth suit pattern above is also from this pattern |
This outfit is
half home made - the dress is Faerie Glen & I made the apron, cap
& belt.
This is how nurses would have been looked from the 1960's to the early
1980's. |
This housecoat is from the
vintage Simplicity Tressy pattern No. 5731
I have added the shower cap & vanity bag. They were made from a circle
of fabric with lace attached to the edge, then I stitched all round the
edge about 1cm inside with a zig zag stitch & shirring elastic in the bobbin
this gathers the edge without any effort! The slippers are the usual Tressy
mules with lace rosettes added. |
This beauty is one of Gary
Alstons fabulous collection! |

Simplicity produced this pattern for
Tressy fashions.
As you can see there was a wide variety of styles to be made.
I adore the red dress & swing jacket with the contrasting fabric!
My Mother made a whole wardrobe of clothes for my Tressy.
Indeed she even made the wardrobe!
Vogue Craft currently do a pattern pack suitable for Tressy.60's &
70's styles Evening Dresses - Day Dresses, Trouser Suits & Disco dress
Vogue Craft 7552.
Careful choice of fabric is a must for vintage
dolls. Some modern fabrics just don't look right & small prints or
plain colours are best.
Older fabrics can be found by scouring the Thrift shops for suitable cast
off clothes to recycle as clothes for Tressy!
Choose a good fabric, cut into large workable pieces, wash & spray
with fabric stiffener & it will be like new & easy to sew.
Small beads can be used for buttons & decoration. Or there are some
companies who produce tiny buttons. (Also see
here: Laneys
buttons)
Attention to detail will guarantee success!

I call this
outfit 'Raspberry Sherbet' because of the small beads sewn to the front,
they remind me of the 'Hundreds & Thousands used to decorate
confectionary! I made a necklace from the same beads, the handbag is a
1980's Barbie bag. Modern shoes.
Again this outfit is from the Simplicity pattern No. 5731
Sadly no longer in print but you can often find them on ebay.com |

Two lovely outfits from
the talented
Laney Cummings.
The one on the left is a reproduction
of the Tressy outfit "Evening Date" - It works very well in this
colour & shows that if we can't get hold of that special outfit we
remember with a little work you can recreate beautiful outfits.
I love the outfit on the right, Laney
makes excellent use of this small design fabric. The glasses are cool too! |
