Letter from the famous cricketer WG Grace regarding Alfred Hyett b.1864
Alfred was a cricket coach at a Gentlemen's College in Gloucester. (this was just one of his jobs!)
He was due to try out for the county team with W.G. Grace. However due to a catastrophic accident when sinking a well he lost an arm & severely injured his legs just prior to the trial. He continued to coach cricket after this - and could still bowl out many of the 'Young Gentlemen'. Legend has it that they would place sovereigns or half sovereigns on the cricket bales & tell him he could have the coin if he could knock it off. He seldom missed!

However the date was changed to 20 May 1919 - as I have a place card that has been written on with the January date crossed out.
